Diagnosis: Boring Rewards That Don’t Inspire Loyalty

If your rewards don’t promote anything but a yawn and a halfhearted “thanks,” chances are you’re not tapping into what your people really want.

Here’s a list of cures for your ailing rewards program:

■ Offer household items, which can be powerful as a constant reminder of achievement.

■ Family weekends away acknowledge support from home as well as superior performance—so do tickets to a theme park or other family-based activity.

■ A person who achieves consistently can be offered the flexibility to set his own schedule. He will not let you down . . . and this flexibility will inspire others.

■ Praise exceptional performances in front of the standout worker’s peers.

Public praise is powerful. But keep this for truly excellent results, or you risk watering down its power.

■ Tickets to an educational seminar or reimbursement of tuition will appeal to people motivated by personal growth. You could also offer personal development books or tapes. (In my time as a leader, I have given away more than five hundred books . . . more than two hundred were The One-Minute Manager!)

■ Send a gift to a partner or spouse who has clearly offered your employee a lot of support, particularly during very busy or stressful work periods.

■ When an excellent employee is on vacation, contact her toward the end of her holiday and surprise her by offering an extra day off. Ensure that she realizes this is a bonus day that is not coming out of her current entitlement balance.

■ Annually allocate five days per twenty employees and allow employees to nominate colleagues for a “Reward Day.” When an employee achieves ten reward-day nominations, he receives a day off.

■ Create “Time Off Chips.” These are a great way to say “well done.” You do not need to give heaps of time off, but make chips for an extra hour at lunch, a few hours in the morning, or a half day, and they will work very well.
